EVHS Girls Volleyball

by Isabel Brodskiy

Our East Valley Falcons girls volleyball team started its season with big goals and great team chemistry. Many players have known each other for years and have already played together. Last year, the Varsity team made it to the semifinals, and even though they didn’t ultimately win, they learned the importance of staying positive and never giving up. With a good coach, healthy routines, and focusing on improving every day, the players are ready for this new season. Let’s take a look at how the team prepares for game days, supports each other, and keeps pushing through close games, all of which helps teach the players lessons that go further than just the volleyball court.

Part of why this team has so much chemistry and has been able to excel this season is because of how long many of the players have known each other. In addition, these players have had a lot of experience when playing. A good number of players have been on varsity since freshman year, and their years of playing games and tournaments together have given them leadership skills and confidence in competition. Lastly, these players have known each other for a while building trust. The majority of the Varsity team are juniors, such as Tara T., Lily K., Abby L., and Ellice K. When watching them play, you can clearly see how close they are. As Tara explained, “A part of the reason why I think this team is so strong is due to how strong our connection is.”

The glue to all this is having a supportive coach, Bryan Ronsayro, who helps guide the team and strengthen communication. Mental strength has become one of the most important qualities for the East Valley volleyball team. The players focus on what they can control instead of stressing about their opponents, and they use a “next play” mindset to move on quickly after mistakes. Last season, the team made it to semifinals but unfortunately couldn’t push past their final challenge. That loss taught them the importance of staying focused and determined until the very end. This season, Varsity are already showing progress with a 5-3 record in league games, Junior Varsity with a 6-2 record, and they aren’t done yet! Varsity is currently in 3rd place with one game left and on their way to playoffs. The players are continuing to build on that success by improving their skills, training every day, and keeping a strong mentality in both games and practices.

The East Valley girls volleyball team is focused on turning their hard work into big accomplishments this season. With only a few games left, students and families can follow their progress by attending their games. Their schedule is posted on their Instagram @ ev.girls.volleyball. As the season wraps up, this group’s dedication and teamwork will make them exciting to watch all the way through. With a strong record in league games and the lessons they’ve carried over from last year, the team is ready to go to the top of the league!

UPDATE: The EVHS girls volleyball team won the Division 2 city championships and advanced to the state regionals. This is the first time the school has made it to states, so this is a big achievement for them!  The school is so immensely proud of their hard work throughout the season. Even though they did not win their round of the state competition, they all played their best and have made us so proud as the team has officially made history for The Science Academy STEM Magnet/East Valley High School. Congratulations to them!
