Meet Ms. French
With Dr. Sanders becoming the Dean of Students, Ms. French has joined our school as the American History and APUSH (AP U.S. History) teacher for grades 8 and 11. We took this opportunity to interview Ms. French and learn more about her and her interests.
Q: What’s your full name?
A: Shauna Marie French (nee Maldonado)
Q: What made you choose our school?
A: I was working for the Division of Instruction, located at the headquarters of LAUSD, and Ms. Gamba [who worked with Mr. Rosenthal last school year] reached out to me with this opportunity. She said the students and staff were amazing. Being my former principal, she mentioned that I would fit in perfectly and have so much fun teaching Supernovas.
Q: What do you like to do outside of school?
A: I like to hang out with my little family, which includes my husband, Tommy, and mini Bernedoodle, Fern.
Q: Tell us about your life before Science Academy.
A: In short, I am originally from Cleburne, Texas. I have lived in Arlington, TX; San Francisco, C; and Los Angeles, CA. I was originally in finance but shifted to education in 2013, when I attended UCLA.
Q: What do you think of The Science Academy so far?
A: I am so fascinated by the thought and discourse that happens in the classroom. The students definitely keep me on my toes, in a good way, and keep me challenged by their engagement and curiosity. Teaching here is exactly what I signed up for when I changed careers from finance to education.
Q: What clubs or events would you like to participate in?
A: I joined a walking and hiking club last summer that I really enjoyed. I used to be a runner but injured my knee, so walking is my go-to sport for now.
Q: What is your greatest motivation or inspiration?
A: Honestly, it would be kindness and authenticity. When folks display these characteristics, I find myself inspired and motivated to create, plan, or build something for my teacher or student community.
Q: What’s your favorite era of history and why?
A: I love American history, especially the 1920s through the Civil Rights era. There was so much happening and changing during that time. I also really like learning about what everyday life was like for people, not just the big events we read about in textbooks.
Eleanor Roosevelt
Q: Who is your favorite historical figure?
A: Probably Eleanor Roosevelt. I think she was really interesting because she didn't just stay in the background as First Lady. She used her position to speak up about issues she cared about and became an important historical figure in her own right.
Q: Where have you traveled to/want to travel to?
A: I've traveled to quite a few places in the U.S., specifically 26 National Parks and all but 9 out of the 50 states, but there are still so many places I want to see. Europe is definitely on my list, especially England, France, and Italy. I would love to actually see some of the historical places I've read about and taught over the years.
Q: What type of music do you like?
A: I listen to a little bit of everything. It really depends on my mood. I like pop, country, and definitely throwback music that I can sing along to.
Q: What are your favorite sports/games?
A: I actually really like sports! Football, basketball, and volleyball are probably my favorites. I enjoy watching them, and I love the energy and competition, especially when it's a good game. I also love to play Monopoly and Jeopardy!
